So to all you wonder women (and men) - here's whats hot, in my humble opinion, for 2024/2025 so you can smash it in your own space.
1. Trend Alert - Japandi! What is that?
It's like the perfect marriage of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian simplicity. Imagine walking into your living room and seeing clean lines, natural materials, and a serene colour palette. It's like stepping into a tranquil oasis where simplicity reigns supreme. Here are some images for some serious Japandi vibes!
2. Unplastered Light Finish Masonry Stone Walls
Picture this: unplastered light finish masonry stone walls that add a cozy, old-world vibe to your living spaces. It's like inviting a piece of history to the party, blending seamlessly with white simplicity. This looks particularly great when paired with sleek windows, such as matt black metal framed windows. Build in accent stone walls.
3. Raw Wood Beams and Rustic Exposed Lintels
This is my favourite way to add depth and character into new spaces.? Cue raw wood beams and exposed lintels, adding warmth and personality to your living spaces. Typically, these can be found at reclamation yards, or they can be railway sleepers, that are sanded back to raw state and then washed for bleached effect. The more rustic, the better if you ask me.
4. Stone Walls in Showers
When looking at décor trends in Europe, we are seeing the re-introduction of stone into bathrooms. And I don’t mean into country homes, I mean in city homes and apartments too. These stone accents are a great tactile touch to walls, especially in bathrooms which can often be sterile spaces.
5. Reclaimed Wood Pieces in New Spaces
If you want to add real soul to your (new) space, consider bringing in reclaimed pieces that have a story to tell. Think old doors, weathered door frames, cupboard doors, and salvaged architectural elements that add a touch of history and charm to your living spaces. When I have decorated client’s spaces and my own homes, I have found that it is these very touches, that set it apart from other homes, and it is often the reason I have always sold any home at full asking price. I believe these are worthy investments.
6. Hande-Aged Pots Bursting with biodiverse plants
Aged pot plants are all the rage at the moment, and you can find tons of online tutorials on youtube on how to make “faux” old pots using baking powder and paint on regular pots that you can find at thrift stores, or just regular terracotta pots from the garden centre. My main point is infuse the new sterile spaces, with textured and pots that tell stories, and fill them with healthy, oversized and loved indoor plants.
Team these with reclaimed wood lintels, or live edge tables, or custom rustic Oak Tables, Custom Order Side Tables and Entry Hallway Consoles , and you will be right on trend.
7. Blending Old and New: Creating Timeless Spaces
There's something magical about blending vintage finds with contemporary pieces, where old meets new. This is a favourite art of mine, when decorating new builds. It's like telling your story through your home decor, where every room has at least one story to tell. Here are some ideas.
8. Wildcard accent colour prediction
I predict that deep red with brown undertones will emerge as a prominent accent colour in 2024. Imagine the allure of rust red accent chairs, adding warmth and depths. This unexpected choice promises to be the wildcard accent colour of the year.
9. An evolution in Open-Plan Living
As the trend of open plan design remains prevalent, I foresee a subtle transition. Expect to see the integration of semi-permeable timber screens (such as slatted room dividers) , sliding glass doors between rooms, and multifunctional bookshelves acting as room dividers. This shift aligns with the growing demand for versatile spaces, catering to improved work-from-home arrangements.
10. Max out on oppullant touches
You know what's making a serious comeback? Maximilism!
And if you're scratching your head wondering what that is exactly, don't worry, you're not alone. It's all about that understated opulence here and there, you know? Think oversize hanging wall tapestries in rich, dining chairs decked out in cozy bouclé fabric (see example below) , and bright sofa's paired with Picasso style collection of mismatched art collages on the wall, and a pop of a crazy bright rug. Oh, and let's not forget about fringe design—those playful, dangly bits that add a touch of whimsy on lampshades or fancy fringed throw blankets draped over sofas. I think the key word here is "playful spaces"

"It was such a pleasure working with Amanda from Vintage etc. I have not collaborated with a supplier on a project like I did with Amanda in a long time. Amanda understood our brief from the minute I spoke to and noted what was required. She even sent through some suggestions which I highly appreciated as it completely enhanced the aesthetics and quality of our product.
Our order started out as a small bespoke order, however when I could not find the “ready-made” items that I was looking for to match our design I quickly went back to Amanda asking for assistance, she never disappointed and was always ready to assist and just be there to bounce ideas off of.
As a result our order with her grew rapidly with a deadline that never changed. We were always kept up to date on the progress of our order, if there was an issue we discussed it openly and honestly always reaching a solution that worked for both of us.
She was also one of the few suppliers I used that delivered on time as promised. I can highly recommend Amanda and Vintage etc. and will definitely be using her for any future projects.

Scandinavian design is chic, timeless and stylish, but perfecting this sought-after home décor trend is not as easy as it looks. It is also perfect for Air BnB spaces or boutique hotels. Here are 8 design tips with image examples on how you can nail this black and white Scandi trend.
Let's do this like a decorator would... 8 great tips to follow !
]]>It is also a design style that is perfect for spaces that need to be relatively neutral. For example creative office spaces, Air BnB rentals that have a design buzz, contemporary boutique hotels. It is timeless, peaceful and the design effort never goes unappreciated.
If you do not want it to look sparse, or soulless, then perfecting this sought-after trend isn’t quite as easy as it looks. Here are a few learned tips on how you can introduce the black and white Scandi trend into your home.
Due to the rise in popularity of open-plan living, introducing statement-making partitions and black windowpanes into modern spaces has become a sought-after interior design trend. It also introduces an industrial edge and contemporary feel. When designing spaces with my clients, we factor this into phase 1 of the renovation, as it provides such a beautiful focal point after which all other furnishings can develop later.
Because of the functionality aspect of Scandinavian design, using storage pieces that double as stylish décor items is a great way to introduce this design trend into your living spaces. Basket accessories for wood, blankets and magazines, or vintage suitcases are all great ideas to achieve this look!
Scandinavian design is known for its chic simplicity and therefore doesn’t involve a whole lot of bright colours. However, if you’re looking to brighten up a space without sacrificing , plants can do just the trick. By introducing greenery in the form of big leafy style pot plants, monster plants, snake plants, palms and succulent pot plants you’re able to bring an earthy element to the already natural look. Pairing it with beautiful wooden accents like storage racks, coffee tables and dining tables works extremely well.
Don't know what to plant for indoors ? No worries, here is a great blog post for you we published a little while back - with a super secret tip on how to keep your plants alive with kitchen waste ! Read indoor plant guide blog post here
With clients that feel they just do not have green fingers, there are some wonderful faux options available now days. It is worth the investment.
Tan is an interior design staple colour that is trending again - we have a dedicated blog post to it here , it nearly provides an earthy pop of colour to monochrome spaces. Shop tan leather items here
While wall-to-wall carpeting is a definite no in Scandinavian design, Herringbone/wishbone pattern rugs and wood floors works very well with this look.
6. Wood storage accents & natural materials
If you have monochrome clean spaces, it is wise to introduce focal points that draw attention. Creating a focal point is the way to do that. Use chunky custom made pieces in reclaimed timber or from rustic cants. Not only does this give your room some eye candy, it also makes your design look more expensive.
At Vintage-etc we custom-make a variety of furniture pieces to suite your exact style and size requirements. You can see our extensive gallery here
Lighting can make or break a space. Introducing black and white hanging lights hung at different levels is therefore a great way to incorporate it into your Scandi design. If however your space is feeling a little harsh, then consider textured lighting (like wicker or cane) to soften it up. See our new arrivals for textured lighting options here
Introducing a dark accent wall, wallpapers with bold botanical patterns and darker shades, or painting your ceiling black are all great ways to shift your chic Scandi design over to the darker side.
Think out the box and consider moving your accent wall to the ceiling while keeping your walls crisp and light. You can see more examples on this trend in a prior blog post here
We certainly hope these ideas inspire you to create your chic, sophisticated Scandi-style spaces. And if you're looking to add any custom-made furniture pieces to complement or elevate your space - @vintage-etc can make it for you. If you can dream it, we can make it.
We make custom-made furniture personalised to your exact size and style requirements. As well as directly from photographs. Tan leather teamed with clean walls, natural rugs, textured coffee tables and big leafy plants, is making an uber come back. The glass and steel backdrop completes this look, not to mention the longevity of leather makes this a worthy investment! See more examples of how interior decorators are styling tan leather

If you are to use accent walls, sticking to the grey, petrol and moss green palette is the way to go with tan leather. Let us show you examples exactly what we mean:
Interior designers love to team a big leather sofa with two occasional mid-century style chairs in linen or natural fabric (examples below) .

There is nothing like a two year global pandemic to turn our little worlds upside down to make us rethink our priorities. We work from home, have zoom meetings, home-school kids, social distancing - this has all created a necessity for our homes to be multi-functional spaces that can be a place we hustle, earn, create, teach, eat and get fit (and still like to be there).
Our kids outspend us online and women are taking the DIY world by storm.
So what what impact will all this have on how we spend our money on our homes .... join us for 10 trend predictions for 2022.
]]>As we gallop into every new year, I set myself an annual challenge to guess what is going make a little more noise the decor industry in the next 18 months. Lucky for me, last year's predictions came through, so let's see if I can do this again.
But first...
There are three key factors that have informed these 10 trends :
A :There is nothing like a two year global pandemic to turn our little worlds upside down to make us rethink our priorities. We work from home, have zoom meetings, home-school kids, social distancing - this has all created a necessity for our homes to be multi-functional spaces that can be a place we hustle, earn, create, teach, eat and get fit (and still like to be there).
B: The digitally savvy Gen Z and Millennials far outspend their parents when it comes to online shopping. No longer are buyers insisting on seeing show rooms, they check your reviews and buy online confidently, but with that spending power, they also bring eco-friendly and social responsibility mandates for us all to be kinder and less demanding on the environment.
C: Social media short form video (think Tik Tok, Youtube, Instagram Reels) are full of DIY queens in double speed, absolutely slaying home-slash-room-slash-furniture make-overs. Never has it been more possible for you and me to believe we master new skills too .... power tools and all.
Trend 1 : Upcycled Vintage is BACK!
Trend 2 : Painted and papered ceilings, take the accent UP
We wrote about this last year and shared how accent inversions in Europe have been a thing for some time, but we are catching up! Read that blog post here
Papered ceilings seem to be growing in popularity particularly in nurseries and library or study areas.
Trend 3: Granny and chintz vibes - deliberately accidental
As always, my Gen Z kids were onto this ages ago, but I've watched the trend steadily gain momentum to the point that its not just thrifting finds, but you can now find needle point decor in retail stores that caught on, in time (example framed tapestry or tapestry covered chairs).
While Granny's hand me down sofa is familiar and comforting, we are talking a level up on this. Think of a deliberately composed space with wall collages made up of original pieces that do and don't match all at the same time, rich tapestries in frames, chairs and ottomans upholstered in vibrant florals, crochet knit cushions and wall collages made out of plates or frames.
Granny-meets-chintz-meet-modern-boho is more the vibe. What I love about this style coming back in, it all appears to be unapologetically feminine in a very deliberately, accidental manner - here are some examples that the team at Vintage-etc has pulled together for you.
This style works particularly well in children's bedrooms - e.g wrought iron beds, tassles and pom-poms and vibrant primary colour accents (new blog post coming soon)
Trend 4. Mid Century Moodiness - with peacock accent colours
Mid-century furniture and colour palette is what seems most popular according to various blogs, magazines and popular stylists. This is where Scandi design is morphing into something a little more moody. It has elements of richness (velvet for example ), earthy tones and also pops of colour. Orange and yellow compliment the darker accents. Mid century furniture tends to finish at "lower" height and legs are slender and taper to the ends.
Special mention must be made of yellow and orange sofas and occasional chairs- these are in hot demand and what was once a brave choice, now a "normal" choice.
Some great examples here ....
Trend 5: Multi-functional spaces - it just makes sense
Since Covid hit, there are some new ways of living that are definitely here to stay. Our homes have to lend themselves to be multi-functional spaces that can be a place we hustle, earn, create, teach, eat and get fit and craft.
The pandemic has also taught us to make do with less....and to make do with less space too. So while we may not have a dedicated room for a study, there are some very clever ways of creating study nooks to accommodate the new normal.
Steel dividers is a whole topic on it's own - that we wrote a blog post dedicated to this trend a while back - see great examples here
In Europe, space is such a premium that everyone uses every inch of their space wisely. Here in South Africa, we tend to be a bit more spoiled for space - but this luxury of separate work spaces is on it's way out.
Do you have an area in your garden you can convert into your own art studio, gym, writers corner, therapy room? It really is the new normal and with a little bit of effort, it can be every inch the space you can be proud to bring clients.
(Continued ) Multi-functional space to host travellers
According to the New York Times, the post pandemic travel wreckage is emerging with a steady pulse for the travel starved. Home rentals have out performed hotels in 27 global markets. With travel back on the cards to South Africa, Air BnB is once again thriving. I myself have rented out my home in Cape Town for nearly 3 months over the season to various international travelling groups. In the five years since I listed our home, this is the busiest my inbox has ever been. I for one, will definitely be creating another space via a garage conversion with a little mezzanine bed space for two travellers OR I will use that for us to move into while we rent out our bigger space.
It just makes sense. Yes?
Trend 6: Bright Accents Pieces : Setting Sun & Rising Moon
This trend here is my wildcard for this blog, I am guessing that primary coloured lacquered Asian-influence accent pieces are making a come back. I don't think it will always be the "real deal", but the style will be borrowed and transferred onto similar and mid-century style pieces.
Trend 7: Doodles and wallpaper
We see the jungle and botanical print theme fades back, the bold oversize whimsacle florals are pushing through. Even half a wall of bold floral paper can change a room in an instant. It is key to team this concept with neutral furnishings, decor and floors if you want the space to remain peaceful.
We also see the emergence of Picasso- style wall art (doodle faces seem popular) and clever black and white wall murals. This doodle effect can work really well in offices, children's spaces, galleries, doctors rooms and bathrooms.
Trend 8: Wall panelling behind beds and in entrance halls
Made hugely popular by the new series on Netflix called Dream Home Makeover ( featuring husband and wife duo Syd and Shea McGee’s design studio) - nearly all the episodes feature these accent walls. Liven up dull hallways by converting it into a utility area, or decorate the back of your bed, or simply use it to create partitions in one big space - by sectionalising it with wood panels. Once painted it acts as as a backdrop to study desks, headboards or in the “boot room”. It works really well to bring on masculine energy into a room if painted darker colours .
Trend 10. Crushing on Cane (and rattan)
I saved my favourite trend for last. I first noticed this big come back 12 months ago, and it was hard work convincing our clients to consider rattan is the cool again. Now it seems that our clients can't get enough of it, but as it is not really mainstream in retail stores yet, so we are creating similar like this for clients from photographs as custom orders (see some examples below) .
What I like about this 1980's revival, is that it is earthy, grounding, environmentally more friendly than chopping trees, but also (importantly) - remote control receivers work through the rattan doors to the electronic units behind. Everything from media cabinets, bedside tables, vanities and booze cabinets, are right on queue and asking to be "rattanised" to soften the edges.
(PS: Team rattan and cane with oversized leafy plants in baskets)
There you go 10 of my predictions in a nutshell ! Please share this with a friend if you found it useful, it is so appreciated when you spread the effort and helps us grow our reach. Thank you for supporting Vintage-etc.com !

It is hard to ignore the beautiful images popping up in our feeds, as social media explodes with big, dark green leafy plants in every corner of homes, from bigger spaces to apartment living. Living with live plants means that you are more in harmony with nature – feeling at peace, especially important when you live in a city or in a smaller space. Here are 6 considered tips from Vintage-etc on how to successfully incorporate plants into your home. From what to choose, where to put them, and how to keep them alive (even if you don't have green fingers).
]]>Here are 6 considered tips from Vintage-etc on how to successfully incorporate plants into your home. From what to choose, where to put them, and how to keep them flourishing, even if you don't have green fingers.
1. Variety
The most magical part of plants in nature is their extraordinary variety - a concept you can mimic in your home by creating a diversity of sizes, species and colours. Put them at different heights, not forgetting the option to hang them from the ceiling and create waterfall effects with creepers from high shelves.
2. One big, statement plant
Do not be afraid to have one giant, big-leafed plant in your home, almost like a big green, much loved pet plant. These are perfect statement pieces and do wonders in transforming a space - and creating harmony with little piece of nature in your space.
Here are some examples of the best indoor statement plants to grow that are low maintenance.
3. Make it personal
Your home should tell a story of who you are and be a collection of pieces that you love. Give your plants personality by playing with their pots.
For the minimalist, choose different sizes of white pots - and cluster those together.
For the collector, create a more eclectic look by choosing old pot plants, tea cups and tea pots, recycled glass jars, and shop at cute little vintage stores for collectable ceramics. Teracotta pots can also be primed, and painted.
4. Cacti and succulents
It is a good idea to choose hardy species like succulents and cacti - but they need adequate light to flourish. Dark green leafy plants and ferns will cope better in less light. See how arranging different plant types in a cluster, can have a magical effect. This arrangement here in white pots, with the greenery placed against a dark accent wall has a transforming effect. Team that with a round mirror, and you will have your A-game on!
5. Crawling and wall-climbing plants
Crawling and wall-climbing plants create a super flow. Place these on shelves in bathrooms and above beds, for that waterfall effect. For a little magic, find dainty battery operated warm (not white) fairy lights, weave them in and out of the cascade, and put those on at night.
Here are some examples of indoor climbing and waterfall effect plants:
6. Don’t have “Green-fingers”? Not to worry!
There is no excuse not to “Green Up” – even if you are convinced that you do not have green fingers. You can not go wrong, if you follow these tips:
a. If you travel often, or simply forget to water your plants regularly; rely on products to help you. Hydrogels and clear/white dry crystals (about the size of coarse salt grains) can get worked into the potting mix. These products can absorb and hold up to 600 times their weight in water and then return it to the soil when it goes dry.
b. Choose free-draining potting soil and sure you put some gravel stone at the bottom of your pots for drainage. Your pots should have holes in them to drain water, so that roots don't get waterlogged and rot. Also use a water tray, under your pot to prevent water damage to surfaces.
c. A clever watering trick – buy an organic sea weed liquid feed that you can add to your water (admittedly, it is a little fishy, but it is wonderful for the plants and the smell goes away after a few hours)
d. Recycle food! I know that it works because I discovered this on Tik-Tok myself and now my indoor plants are flourishing. Save all of your avocado pips, avocado skins, and banana skins (potassium). Dry those in the oven on low heat overnight (or on the window ledge) and once those are dried, blend them to a powder in your blender. Mix this with a table spoon of cinnamon powder (which is a great anti-fungal) and save it in a glass jar. Work it into the top of your pot plants with a teaspoon, when they need a bit of a boost. Water, and you’re good to go again!
e. When your plants look like they are getting a bit big for the pot, either transfer them to a bigger pot (feed your soil first) - or..... split the roots, and the plant into a second pot - top up with soil and you have another plant for you home, or as a gift for a friend.
f. Occasionally, take a bunch of your indoor plants and put them in the bath or shower to feed with food and water. Working them in the bath or shower lets you get stuck in with your little fork, build air into the soil and roots without worrying about the mess you leave behind. When done, just rinse the bath.
g. Try put them outside for some fresh air and natural light if you can for a day or two every couple of weeks - they will regenerate and shoot and then put them back inside again.
Go get green!

1. Two-toned cabinetry
Two-toned cabinetry provides the best of both worlds.
When following this trend, one should pair a deeper and darker coloured base with white or light upper cabinetry. Consider picking up an accent colour on the door frame or even on the window frames Forget boring white ( or chrome ) frames. Anything can be tinted ...
Break up accent colours in kitchens with warm, Oak beams, or timber floating shelves, and remember that light white counters temper the dark paint on the units.
2. Accent Ceilings
We are loving this trend! Although accent walls are the go to choice, how about switching things up?
Accent ceilings are the perfect way to create a statement in your home, whilst still keeping it light and airy. It is contemporary, comforting and grounding - all at the same time. Dare to try it?
3. Dark, deep doorways, skirting and architraves
Traditionally, skirting boards and doorways have always been made lighter than the walls around them.
Recently we have seen this idea being turned on its head, accent coloured doorways, skirting and architraves - and it looks SO good.
Accent wall paneling has made a great come back, so much so we have a dedicated blog post for that here.

The brand new reality series features the busy lives of Syd and the talented Shea McGee, their two young daughters and the behind the scenes at their enviable studio and own home. This couple mortgaged their first home to fund their own design studio and now the duo run a major interiors business in the US.
The series documents the couple as they transform their clients' spaces into the homes of their dreams - and features a variety of projects from a modest bathroom for an juggling mother of a gaggle of young kids, to a super impressive granny flat for a mother-in-law - to heritage homes, and also the more lavish make-overs like a ranch style home with a built in basketball court.
Here we summarize our 7 top tips from the entire series:
1. You do not have to settle with just one style
Episode 4 of Season 1 teaches us that you do not have to settle with just one style in order to create the home of your dreams. In this episode, we see Diana, who loves the idea of a boho-chic style home, and Oscar, who prefers a more modern clean lines. To begin with, the combination seems conflicting and challenging, but we later see Shea pairing the two styles effortlessly into a win-win solution. She shows us how to effortlessly blend styles to match personalities of the home owners without being fearful of a clash of personal style.
2. Styling shelving properly, is well worth it.
Displays are an important part of a home, they set the mood of the space and instantly improve overall aesthetics. Taking time to create the perfect uncluttered, aesthetic arrangement for your shelves is necessary. Putting some of your renovation budget into purchasing great display items, is a great idea.
Three of our own tips for styling shelves are:
Key take out – styling shelves is a mini project all on its own, make the time and budget available. Effort is sexy.
3. Bring in elements of the rest of the house, into your main bedroom.
In order to create a sense of flow within your home, your bedroom and the main areas of your house should have some style similarities.
“I like to take one or two colours or textures from the main part of the house and pull them in,” guides Shea.
The main McGee concept is to keep bedrooms a peaceful place to wind down - using more neutral than brighter colours. They stick to a similar palette and style to the living areas. We see how Shea creates some movement with with fluffy throws and chunky knits and scatter cushions to soften the spaces.
4. Combine different styles of seating
In a spacious living room, there is no need to stop at just one style of seating. Mix and match different styles and textures to create a powerful look. Shea's signature style is to pair two free standing chairs with the sofas, and to dress the central coffee table or ottoman, with items of visual interest.
5. Too much wood can be overkill
Episode 5 shows us that too much wood , especially on ceilings, can make a place look drab and gloomy. Shea recognizes and respects the home's history by keeping some of the beautiful barn style beams, but lightens up the space by whitewashing the ceiling in between the beams to create a more modern and bright feel. Every (initially) reluctant client, seemed thrilled with the result of getting rid of knotty timber ceilings.
On the inverse, in some episodes, Shea also introduced beautiful sleeper style beams into rooms that had boring flat ceilings, to add some instant warmth and luxury to main bedrooms and living areas.
6. Furnish a bathroom with a freestanding tubs and vanities
Shea ensures that her home has her dream bathtub, and we can understand why she advocates the same for her for her client bathroom renovations. Freestanding tubs act as the ultimate hub of relaxation and rejuvenation. It also is a great focal point and transform what can be a hard space, into something of a mini-sanctuary - especially for the overworked parents of young children.
McGee Studio seems to have a stamp on the type of vanities they install. The bathrooms featured are such a source of inspiration, where function meets and beauty. Often the vanity is painted in an accent colour, the walls feature framed sets of mirrors and accent lighting. Note the addition of green plants to bathroom vanities.
7. White kitchens need not be a harsh space
Shea teaches us that all-white kitchens are anything but mundane, by blending hints of natural wood, brushed brass and stainless steel equipment into it.
One of Shea’s tricks in making sure a white kitchen is not too stark, is to bring in warm wood accents on counters and shelves, basket weave chandeliers and rugs, adding textured tall bar stools for around the island.
The other idea we see play out in new white kitchens, is to bring in the old. She uses textured tiles (slightly wonky ceramics ) to add movement - as per examples below.
Last but not least, lest we forget - is the wood paneling idea featured in almost every episode. Shea livens up dull hallways by converting it into a utility area, or decorates (or partitions) living rooms and bedrooms with timber paneling.
We loved this concept so much, we dedicated a blog post to that tip here, click to read more.
So, that is a wrap on our top take outs from Dream Home Makeover. Make some tea and time to watch it if, you have not watched it already. It really is what dreams are made of, beautifully edited, touching moments with likeable people. You can watch the official trailer here

Made hugely popular by the new series on Netflix called Dream House Makeover, nearly all the episodes feature these accent walls. Liven up dull hallways by converting it into a utility area, or decorate the back of your bed, or simply use it to create partitions in one . It works really well to bring on masculine energy into a room if painted darker colours . Read full blog post for more renovation tips ....
]]>Liven up dull hallways by converting it into a utility area, or decorate the back of your bed, or simply use it to create partitions in one big space - by sectionalising it with wood panels.
This rustic and fun alternative can be painted in nearly any colour and can be used on accent walls or ceilings, as a backdrop to study desks, headboards or in the “boot room”. It works really well to bring on masculine energy into a room if painted darker colours .
The best part about this trend is that it does not have to be expensive - do it yourself. Better yet, if the trend starts to fade... paint it a different colour, sand it down, add to it - the options are endless.

If you don’t yet have a desk, measure the area you’re working with. Consider keeping your desk space clear by including shelving nearby (or overhead), or an L-Shape desk with storage underneath. Getting a custom made desk from reclaimed wood - click on the desks below to see more info - can offer significant savings.
The outdoor space of your home should be an extension of your indoor space. With some planning, it could be a beautiful place to decompress in style. Here are seven quick wins:
Matchy-matchy furniture is out, and the looser Scandi style inspiration is in. Plan your outdoor space just like you would your lounge. Think of resting places for drinks and to kick back and put your feet up. Scatters, faux throws, bespoke outdoor carpets certainly make it cozy and "roomy".
Combining organic materials such as wicker, wood, sisal to create your ideal outdoor living space. Think about including a swing chair as seat on your patio (attached to a strong beam). This Aruba Oak Swing is made from reclaimed oak wine barrels to stand the test of time.
How can turn your outdoor space into an outdoor room?
Adding a bench to your outdoor dining area is a great way to switch up your outdoor seating options. We see a bench on one side being an increasingly popular choice to break things up, but also because when people scootch down, you can fit more around the table.
If you have a longer table (over 2.6m) consider two smaller benches side by side - which are easier to move for those in the middle.
Think of how you can introduce warm, low-level garden lights to your outdoor dining area. When you choose bulbs, choose warm yellow, not harsh white light. With LED strips, also choose warm, not white. Look at this clever idea with a repurposed vintage ladder. Waterfall, fairy lights and consol jars with candles create whimsical spaces and is absolutely worth the effort.
Traditionally, outdoor furniture has been very expensive, but there are cost saving ideas on outdoor tables. When our clients have limited budgets, we often suggest they opt for tables with 70mm borders (as per image above) as that way less timber is used than 70mm solid top tables and you'll have savings of up to 30%. If your table is on a covered patio, you can easily use reclaimed Oregon, which is also kinder to the environment! Get it stained to warm Oak or lime-washed to light white for the holiday vibe. If your table is exposed to the elements like harsh sun, rain and wind, we do recommend hardy wood . Always reseal your outdoor tables once a year for longevity. See some more ideas here
Cosy outdoor spaces have become an extension of our indoor space by introducing chic and comfy outdoor chairs and sofas. Think swings, rugs and scatters - under covered areas into your outdoor space. This way you can enjoy stylish outdoor living regardless of the time of year, not to mention to reclaim the indoor space while you send half your noisy folk outside during the holidays to get off Netflix! The hanging planters look great, especially against charcoal backdrops
What we love about the firepit is that it seems to be the place people gather to talk. Watching the flame is somehow mesmerising, time passes and we forget about "doing" and move into being present. Other than the odd Chardonnay while decompressing after a long day, I love to listen to teenagers chat with their friends over marshmallows, I get a glimpse into their world! Firepits do not need to be complex with sunken seats and concrete benches, a very simple version can be installed in one afternoon.
Mirrors are the easiest and most under-rated quick fix for upgrading your outdoor space. Not only does it reflect the greenery for smaller spaces, but it starts feeling more homely too.
What I especially love is how clever this gardener is by putting a mirror behind painted trellis to create a the illusion of depth and double up on greenery. A great idea for flats with balconies and small terrace gardens. (credit to @designsponge)

You can expect to see a lighter beige hue making its appearance on the walls of many modern homes in 2020. It is even expected to replace white walls, even in Nordic style homes where white has always been the first choice. An extra insider styling tip to seamlessly introduce the beige colour trend into your home is to pair it with beautiful, minimalist interiors with just the right amount of texture. Making use of furniture materials such as rattan and textiles in your interior design styling will therefore beautifully compliment the beige colour. In addition to beige, you can also expect to see soft coral and earth tones making their appearance in 2020 aimed at creating a more insulated, calming and soothing effect.

]]>Stand-alone baths have become incredibly popular as statement pieces in modern bathrooms. Often positioned in a way for you to enjoy the view, statement bathtubs also act as a beautiful focal point. Available in a range of different styles, form oversized luxury tubs to chic sculptural designs, there truly is something for everyone.
The bathroom below is by @8degreessouth and is a great example of a creative use of lighting and free standing elements.
Gone are the days of recessed halogen lights! Ambient lighting and statement light fittings have become a leading interior design trend in creating the ideal sanctuary bathroom. Strings of pendant lights, wall sconces, chandeliers and even unique lamps are all making an appearance, and not to mention dimmer switches, which are an absolute must-have for creating an ambience of serenity.
Formerly taboo surfaces such as wood are becoming increasingly popular when creating the ideal bathroom sanctuary space. It is also an effective way to soften harder surfaces such as concrete, tiles or stone. Natural stone for floors and vanity tops and metallic accents is another great way to introduce a natural element into your bathroom space. Introducing a feature wall made from river rock or natural stone has also become a leading sanctuary bathroom trend.
The two bathrooms below ( by @studio McGee) takes bathroom cabinetry to the next level in this serene bathroom
Bespoke cabinetry that provide seamless storage and custom-made vanities that bear more than a passing nod to living room cabinetry are becoming increasingly popular in modern bathrooms. But why limit your bathroom furniture to storage racks and vanities? Armchairs upholstered in a quality textured fabric, a bookcase, coat stands for hanging bathrobes, stylishly textured rugs and stunning statement mirrors are all being introduced into bathrooms to create the ultimate sanctuary space.
We definitely hope this inspires you to create your sanctuary bathroom space in order to relax, recharge & rejuvenate, you definitely deserve it!

]]>Terrarium Moss was noted to be one of the colour trends for 2020. The colour came as a tribute to nature and the intense colors of meadows and woods. We have spotted the colour trend everywhere, from weddings to kitchens to bathrooms!
Although, if you aren't feeling as very brave, we have some ideas for mini-moss green make overs - like a chair/sofa or a beautiful piece of moss green art. See below ....
Another trend that we have been watching, is BIG bold wallpaper botanical prints. Now, wallpaper is being used to create a feature, texture and creative space in homes, restaurants or hotels. Wallpapering an accent wall can work out more cost-effective ( and visually effective) than re-painting your entire lounge. We also love that this works so well with the moss colour trend. See some ideas below.
Happiness is a room make-over. Enjoy the inspiration ....

The custom-order side of our business has grown significantly over the last two years and will become our main focus going forward. See some of our options below.
OAK CROSS LEG
By far our best seller in terms of custom order tables. The reason it is popular is because it appears to be super chunky, but in fact it it has a 70mm border around the edge that keeps the manufacture cost low. Order the Oak Cross Leg Table with or without benches.
OREGON FARMHOUSE TABLE
Made from reclaimed Orgeon, this Farmhouse Table is rustic and looks beautiful on a covered verandah or country setting. For this client, we used the supporting beams from their inside their roof (removed in a refurb) to make rustic benches.
A-LEG TABLE
A trestle-style table with matching bench chairs. This table is made from reclaimed Oregon and has a 50mm table top, making it an affordable choice. Prices vary according to size- starting at R7500.
TUBULAR METAL LEGS
Black tubular metal is most certainly trending at the moment. We can make these tables in Iroko, Oak or reclaimed Oregon. Prices vary according to size and timber chosen. Prices start from R9500.
Visit our Made To Order page and send through your Wishlist table!
]]>What we found impressive, was the decorators ability to stay with the traditional look of the homes in Ibiza, which is Spanish style villas with textured white walls, colourful tiles and timber supports - but bring in Scandinavian modern elements.
Whilst white walls are kept white throughout the home, accent pieces and statement chandeliers are brought in to add character. Reclaimed timber benches, live edges on tables and side tables - an oh, the beams! These strategically add warmth to a mostly white space. Large windows allows beautiful sunshine to flood the space throughout the day to ensure a year-round holiday vibe.
Dining room goals!
We can imagine the beautiful dinners and memories made and shared in this space. The dining room table is unapologetically rustic, but complimented with modern chairs. Wooden beams tie the timber elements together - while copper pendants bring about that local island flavour while being 100% on trend.
We do love touches, like the cluster of five varied copper pendants at different heights all along the dining table. The designer has also cleverly used round mirrors, circular pendants and circular nesting coffee tables to create synergies.
Let's talk living room:
The wingback chairs strategically placed overlooking the beautiful island views. A nice little touch tying up the loom style wingbacks with the loom style lanterns on the nesting tables. The fireplace is also oval, this again ties up with the theme of round and circular room accessories.
Throughout the bedrooms, in this dreamy villa, we noticed a very minimalistic approach (why are our bedrooms always so cluttered?). The use of a low sofas and low bed keeps it Modern-Scandi, with an accent chair per bedroom. Tones are kept neutral with accent colour subtly brought in. The clever use of reclaimed cupboard doors breaks the solid white walls and reminds us we are in Ibiza!
Design and style credit to #LaGrange, you get 10 out of ten from the www.vintage-etc.com team!

Scatter cushions and blankets
We totally love this, going into winter it is so easy to add some colour in to your room with a big fluffy blanket, or a beautiful knitted throw. Not only does this help you to add colour, it helps to add visual interest with textures and patterns.
Decorating Tip: 60 - 30 - 10
When decorating a room we use this rule, where 60% is your main colour, 30% secondary colour and 10% being your accent colour.
Hardware
At first, you may not see your drawer or cupboard handles as a big deal. However, these are little things that make a big difference!
An effortless way to go from vintage to modern or modern to vintage. You can go for a brass finish, a modern copper or even matte black. Remember to ensure all drawers or cupboards are changed in the space to complete and tie the look together.
Plants or flowers
Every space should have plants! Plants act as a neutral element to your space, they add visual interest without drawing attention away from your statement pieces and they can even add a pop of colour!
When choosing a plant remember to take into consideration the space you are working with. How much sunlight does it get, think of the maintenance you are willing to put in to caring for the plant and get one that suits not only the space but your lifestyle.
Note: If you have pets, please make sure you check poisonous houseplants for pets!
Decor Pieces
The purpose of decor pieces are purely visual, the style you are trying to achieve for the space is easily finished off by adding a decor item to match. When choosing decor pieces, it is best to look for variety. Find items that vary in colour, size and shape. Arrange them in groupings to ensure their placement feels purposeful.
We hope this has inspired you to get decorating!
